City Engineer Kevin Stafford, right, speaks to Josh Read about the upcoming traffic plans for Columbus during a Rotary Club meeting at Lion Hills Center on Tuesday. Stafford discussed the Mississippi Department of Transportation grant for a roundabout at Second Street downtown. The roundabout will cost $1 million for construction, with MDOT paying 80 percent, while the city matches the remaining costs. Stafford said planning and construction will hopefully start in 2020. Stafford also showed city plans for a new semi-roundabout on Military Road and intersection updates on 18th Avenue North. He said the $4.8 million project for 18th Avenue and Military Road improvements is fully funded by MDOT which includes upgrades to traffic lights and a new light on 18th Avenue coming from the eastbound off-ramp on Highway 82. Military Road will have two semi-roundabouts near Lowe's and Brickerton shops. Stafford said Gregory Construction will start work in March and will take about a year to complete.
